Trading Firms in Calgary

Calgary is Canada's energy trading hub, and almost exclusively that: physical crude, natural gas, NGLs, and Alberta power, not systematic finance. The cluster grew straight out of the oil patch, deepened by 1980s natural-gas deregulation and Alberta's late-1990s power-market liberalization, which created liquid benchmarks around Western Canadian Select and provincial electricity.

The global merchants are all here for the Canadian crude book: Trafigura, Vitol, Mercuria, and Gunvor, alongside home-grown marketers like Tidal Energy and Fathom. Desks here are fundamental and discretionary rather than algorithmic. There is no quant hedge fund or stat-arb presence to speak of; for that Canada looks to Toronto and Montreal. LNG Canada exports, begun in 2025, are adding fresh gas flows through Calgary desks.
