Trading Firms in Geneva

Geneva trades the world's physical commodities, and the quantitative work here lives inside that business, not on an exchange. The big independent merchants cluster along the Rue du Rhone: Gunvor and Mercuria, both founded in the city, and the Geneva offices of Vitol, Trafigura, and Cargill.

Gunvor and Mercuria date from 2000 and 2004, and Cargill has run its global grain business from Geneva since 1956. With no local exchange there is no electronic market making; the quant work sits in the risk, modelling, and structured-derivatives arms of the trading houses, plus a layer of hedge funds serving the city's private-banking clients. Geneva's edge is durable: legal stability, a multilingual workforce, and decades of institutional knowledge of physical oil, metals, and grain flows. Newer hubs in Dubai and Singapore compete for some of the flow, but the cluster has proven unusually sticky.
