The Take-Home Assignment
Some firms follow the online assessment with a take-home, or use one instead: a single problem, with anywhere from a two-hour window to several days to finish it. They are more common for experienced hires, and at firms that want to see how you build software rather than how fast you solve a puzzle. Reported examples include an order book with matching, a small game, and a design exercise marked on its structure and its tests.
Two stages of marking
A take-home is often marked twice. First come hidden tests, as in an online assessment: the program must build, run and give correct results, including on inputs you were not shown. Then an engineer reads the code. Passing the tests gets your code read, and the reading decides the outcome.
