The Extension Round
Some firms build their live coding rounds around one problem that grows. You write a small first version, and then the interviewer adds a requirement, and then another, for sixty or seventy minutes, sometimes with two interviewers in the room. A related format asks you to build an object from scratch and then adds methods to it one at a time. This round rewards a different skill from the online assessment. It is less about finding a clever algorithm quickly, and more about writing real code that stays easy to change.
What gets graded
- Correctness at each step, in code that runs, not pseudo-code.
- How much of your earlier code survives each new requirement.
- Communication: whether you clarify the requirement, explain what you are doing, and use hints.
- Testing: whether you check your own code, or wait to be told it is wrong.
