A filing states the base salary offered for one job. It does not include the bonus. For a single figure the list shows the median; for a range, the medians of both ends, and pay sorts by the upper end.
What is a salary filing?
When a US firm hires someone on a work visa, it files the base salary it will pay with the US government, and the filing is public. It states the base only. A discretionary bonus is left out, because only pay that is assured counts toward the filed wage.
Why do some firms file a range?
Some firms file one figure for each job; others file a range. The lower end of a range is often the legal minimum for the role in that city, not what the firm pays, so read the two ends together and lean on the upper one.
What do the filings not show?
They cover people who needed a visa, at every level from graduate to senior, so they say nothing about how many people a firm hires overall. They leave out the bonus and the sign-on, which at these firms can be larger than the base. The firm and city salary pages add both.
