Viking Global's founder came to investing by an unusual route. Ole Andreas Halvorsen is Norwegian-born and a former US Army Ranger before he trained under Julian Robertson at Tiger Management, making Viking one of the Tiger Cubs that spun out of that lineage. He launched the firm in October 1999 with Brian Olson and David Ott.

Viking built itself into one of the largest equity hedge funds in the world on fundamental long-short and long-only stock picking, with a private-equity sleeve alongside. The work is research-driven rather than purely systematic, though systematic elements play a part. In late 2023 the firm moved its Connecticut base from Greenwich to Stamford after roughly two decades in the former.
