Schonfeld

Steven Schonfeld started his firm in 1988 with 400,000 dollars and turned it into one of the busiest short-term trading operations of the early 1990s, an early pioneer of statistical strategies, some reportedly still in use. Then he stepped back: in 2009 the business became a family office managing his own money, and only across 2015 and 2016 did it reopen to outside capital and register as an investment adviser.

That second act made Schonfeld a multi-manager platform, housing many portfolio teams across quantitative, fundamental equity, tactical, and macro strategies under one risk framework. Ryan Tolkin has run it as CEO and CIO since 2021, adding a Miami second headquarters and a Dubai macro desk. The quant lineage still shows in its Quantbot subsidiary, seeded from a Merrill Lynch stat-arb group in 2009.
