Marshall Wace
Marshall Wace turned broker research into a tradable asset. When co-founders Paul Marshall and Ian Wace argued over whether sell-side ideas held any investable value, a summer intern's tracking system settled it and became TOPS, launched in 2002 as the first alpha capture platform. It ingests trade ideas from thousands of sell-side contributors across dozens of countries, simulates each one's track record, ranks them, and builds market-neutral portfolios from the best signals, paying contributors on merit.
The firm pairs that systematic engine with discretionary long/short equity, fitting the founders' backgrounds: Marshall came from European equities at Mercury Asset Management, Wace from equities trading at Deutsche Bank. They launched in 1997 with seed money half of which came from George Soros. KKR took a minority stake in 2015, adding credit and private-market reach.
