Man Group (Man AHL)
Man Group's roots run back to 1783, when it was a sugar and rum merchant, an origin almost no other hedge fund can claim. Today it is the largest publicly listed alternative asset manager, traded on the London Stock Exchange, and its systematic engine is Man AHL.
AHL takes its initials from founders Cyril Adam, David Harding, and Martin Leuck, who built it as an independent commodity trading advisor in 1987; Harding later left to found Winton. Man acquired it across 1989 to 1994 and turned trend following into industrial-scale infrastructure, generating thousands of signals a day across more than 800 markets. The model rests on a simple wager: markets carry persistent, behaviorally driven anomalies worth systematically harvesting.
