Lone Pine Capital

The name has nothing to do with markets. It points to a 250-year-old white pine at Dartmouth, Stephen Mandel Jr.'s alma mater, that survived a lightning strike and kept growing. Mandel left Julian Robertson's Tiger Management in 1997 to start the fund, making him one of the original and best-known Tiger Cubs.

Lone Pine works the way Robertson taught: bottom-up, single-name fundamental research rather than systematic signals, run as both long/short and long-only equity. It remains one of the anchor managers of the Greenwich hedge fund cluster, a generation on from the Tiger diaspora that produced it.
