Capital Fund Management (CFM)
What the firm calls itself is closer to a physics department than a trading floor, and its chair and chief scientist, Jean-Philippe Bouchaud, holds a simultaneous professorship in physics at Ecole Polytechnique and a seat in the French Academy of Sciences. The model-driven approach carries no discretionary overlay: programs run, risk managers watch, nobody overrides the machine.
CFM began in 1991 under Jean-Pierre Aguilar and Bruno Combier, then merged in 2000 with Bouchaud's research outfit Science & Finance, fusing a trading business with an academic one. Its flagship Stratus program is multi-strategy and multi-asset, and the firm has built newer vehicles around that capacity. A Shanghai engineering and data hub extends the same research-first culture into Asia. Investors are institutional, drawn as much by the method as the returns.
