AQR Capital Management

AQR publishes its research for free: working papers and blog posts that an asset manager of its scale could easily keep proprietary. That openness traces to Cliff Asness, who built the firm's intellectual identity around factor investing and remains one of finance's most visible public voices.

The name stands for Applied Quantitative Research, the work Asness and three Goldman Sachs Asset Management colleagues, David Kabiller, Robert Krail, and John Liew, spun out to do in 1998. Every decision runs through models grounded in value, momentum, carry, and defensive premia, never discretion. AQR was among the first alternative shops to package hedge-fund strategies as mutual funds, in 2009, and moved from New York to Greenwich in 2004. It stays founder-owned and private despite its size.
